Biotechnology has the potential to provide sustainable solutions to our most critical environmental problems. In 2011, BIO-X is looking to support your project proposal in green and industrial biotechnology. BIO-X invites you to submit a proposal for establishing the proof of concept of a significant new solution with a future market benefit by applying biological knowledge to areas such as, but not limited to, environmental solutions, plant production, plant breeding, bioenergy, forestry or food technology.
The burdens of climate change and population growth place enormous pressure on our ecosystems. As living standards rise, the competition for land, water and raw materials by growing populations will be intense and further aggravated by higher rates of consumption, increasing waste, unsustainable production practices and the threat of zoonosis.
Biotechnology has the potential to provide sustainable solutions to these our most critical problems. We look forward to food with healthier nutrient profiles, and plants that will produce essential nutrients that were once exclusive to animal sources. We will be able to grow crops in harsher climatic conditions, and produce renewable sources of biopolymers, pigments, and raw materials that were previously derived from fossil fuels. We will be able to clean our water and fertilize and protect our crops by natural processes. We will produce food more safely, track it more smartly, and therefore send less to waste.
BIO-X offers a unique opportunity for academia and a partner from industry and end-users in the private or public sector to develop their best ideas together, as well as cultivate their skills, experience and professional network. Mutual investment ensures that all parties are engaged, and professional tracking methods keep BIO-X projects on plan.
BIO-X favours projects that can make significant improvements to the state of the art and may contain a high degree of risk, rather than low risk projects that lead to incremental improvements. The end goal is a proof of concept for a competitive new product or approach. Some proposals may offer profound benefits only in the long term. Such projects are eligible when our support reduces the risk for the industrial partner and promotes the development of sustainable solutions.
Applications for BIO-X support are accepted from research groups working at The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences as well as Uppsala University. Collaborators may be based anywhere in the world.
